Xerox Has Come a Long Way

Recently a few colleagues and I had the pleasure of spending time with Sree Sreenivasan (@sree) of  NY’s Columbia University (@ColumbiaJourn) where we talked about social media and its future in the corporate workplace.  Sree then showed us a mosaic poster of  his FaceBook (or was it twitter) followers from a web company called Social PrintShop (@SocialPS). It was so cool to see all those avatar boxes in one place and reminded me of two things:

Xerox's seven-story banner composed of 17,000 employee photos

1) In support of the 2002 Salt Lake City and 2004 Greece Olympic Games, Xerox created massive six and seven-story banners out of the individual portraits of tens of thousands of  Xerox employees from more than 60 countries around the world.  Sree’s poster was an individual take on this same theme.  My take:  Xerox creative folks were way ahead of their time!

2) Although I don’t specifically know the reason why he showed us this poster,  my guess is that he associates Xerox with printing/copying – and rightly so, a history of which the company is very proud, and an industry where Xerox continues to innovate.  However, the company’s portfolio of products and services, and it’s diverse businesses has allowed Xerox to spread way beyond its roots.

Just take a look at the categories on the right column of this blog.  Xerox is in places one would never expect.  In fact, our news announcing the $200 million contract with MGM Resorts to do IT services is one of the latest examples.

So, @sree and everyone else reading this blog,  take a look at Xerox today and let us know what you think.

I remember the Olympic mosaics. All the photos were from our employee ID badges. If you wanted to be a part of the mosaic, you had to log on to a Web site to grant permission; a couple of clicks and it was done.

    Yep. It was pretty cool.
