A Glimpse Inside Innovation at Xerox – We’ve Come a Long Way!

by, Monica Beltrametti, Centre Manager, Xerox Research Centre Europe

As Centre Manager of Xerox Research Centre Europe and company champion of the transfer of Xerox technology to our growing services business, I know what’s in store for the more than 70 journalists and analysts traveling to Grenoble France this week for a sneak peek inside our labs.   – and I couldn’t be more excited for them!

While our visitors will have certainly come a long way traveling from 25 countries to attend this week’s event — they aren’t the only ones that have traveled far as our own researchers have come a long way too.  You see, services now account for more than 50 percent of our revenue and the projects we’ll be showcasing are the result of applying our expertise to develop the next generation of services in such varied industries as transportation, healthcare, and banking – just to name a few.

I wish I could invite all of you inside our labs to see firsthand the transformation that is happening in Xerox research.  For example, our researchers are using video cameras and image processing technologies to develop a system that monitors a patient’s vital signs without making contact with their body.  We are also applying analytics to make public transportation networks more effective resulting in lowering green house gas emissions and frustration levels of thousands of commuters.

These are among the many projects we’ll be showing this week that fit under three themes of our research:

  • Giving Computers the Gift of Sight
  • Making Information and Data Meaningful
  • Assisting Experts and Automating Complex Manual Tasks

Stay tuned for a few news releases on research projects we’ll be announcing this week including a system that promises to address a major challenge facing banks in developing countries as well as two novel approaches to help us reduce energy use and save trees.

It is indeed a fun and exciting time to be doing research at Xerox and we can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to!
