Two Things You Didn’t Know Your Printer Can Do

By Gregory Pings

When Xerox made copiers digital, the office copier was transformed into a multifunction printer or all-in-one, that could scan, print, fax — and copy too.

Now consider what happens when you load apps on your printer. All of a sudden, your multifunction printer bridges the physical world of paper to the digital world, making work and communications more collaborative, productive, and mobile.

Here are three things you can do with the app-enabled functions on your Xerox ConnectKey® multifunction printer. These capabilities are among the featured technologies in Project: SET THE PAGE FREE, where 14 renowned writers and artists worked and collaborated to create the book Speaking of Work.

1. Paperclips create a new font

The book Speaking of Work, A Story of Love, Suspense and Paperclips, inspired the paperclip metaphor on the cover. This video shows how spelling the word “work” with paperclips on a VersaLink® C405 multifunction color printer’s platen, then using an app to scan the image to a DropBox repository in the cloud, helped designer Chip Kidd create the paperclip font.

2. Translate

In today’s interconnected global world, translation can be a challenge. For starters, no one can speak every language. And then there are uni-lingual people (like me) who can be easily outwitted in multiple languages by the average European pre-school child.

Alain Mabancikou wrote his Speaking of Work chapter in his native French. In the video above, creative editor Sloane Crosley demonstrates how the Xerox®  Easy Translator Service app allowed her to scan a paper document written in French, and receive an English translation in the printer’s output tray. Voila!

3. Share

You probably use your printer’s scanner to share files right now. But consider how printer apps for cloud-based services like Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive and Office 365 can help you share these files and documents more quickly and easily. Moreover, the apps allow you to scan and share in multiple formats, and print directly from the repository.

This video shows a quick and easy way to enable work collaboration and sharing using Xerox DocuShare® Flex from your computer. But, yes, we have a DocuShare scanning app that you can load onto your ConnectKey-enabled printer right now.

Hi and thanks for taking my question. if one color ink cartridge is empty , can i still print in black ink only?

Hi Albert: I entered your question into Xerox’s Customer Support Community. Here’s the answer I found:

“It depends on the model of printer, but typically on anything relatively new, as long as you set it to BW everywhere possible it will still print. If you set it to Auto, or color, or the driver is set to Rich black and not Pure black, then it will fail.”

Answers to any of your questions can be found on the Support Community. And if your question is unique, it will receive an answer from an expert.
      Cheers,
      Greg
